Omnisend is clearly built with ecommerce businesses in mind.
That became obvious almost immediately during our hands-on test.
We created a free account, configured a PG Systems Lab sending domain, built a test email campaign, tested delivery to Yahoo, and explored the automation interface.
The experience was generally straightforward, with one important caveat:
Omnisend makes much more sense for ecommerce teams than for general-purpose email marketing.
This review covers what we actually tested, what worked well, and where we encountered limitations.

What We Tested
For this review, we tested Omnisend using a new free account.
Our hands-on test included:
- account signup and onboarding
- non-ecommerce onboarding
- campaign creation
- text-only email templates
- preview and test-send workflow
- unsubscribe handling
- custom sending-domain setup
- SPF, DKIM, and DMARC configuration
- Yahoo inbox delivery
- the automation interface without a connected store
We did not test a live Shopify store, SMS delivery, production ecommerce automations, or paid-plan features.
Signup and Onboarding
Creating an account was simple.
Omnisend allowed us to start without a credit card, and signup was available through Shopify, Google, or email.
We used email signup.
The onboarding process asked for:
- name
- business name
- website
- physical business address
- timezone
- phone number
A physical address was required during onboarding for anti-spam compliance.
We selected Non-ecommerce during signup.
This worked, but after entering the application, the product’s ecommerce focus became very clear.
The dashboard immediately encouraged us to connect a store, and several major features were presented in the context of ecommerce activity.
Omnisend Is Ecommerce-First
This is probably the most important conclusion from our test.
You can create an Omnisend account without running an ecommerce store, but the platform is clearly designed around ecommerce workflows.
The dashboard emphasized actions such as:
- connecting a store
- converting visitors into subscribers
- ecommerce automations
- sales reporting
- adding store products to campaigns
For an online store, this positioning makes sense.
For a general B2B company that only needs newsletters and simple automation, Omnisend may be more specialized than necessary.
Campaign Creation Was Easy
We were able to create an email campaign without connecting a store.
The campaign workflow was easy to understand:
- Email settings
- Template selection
- Content editing
- Audience selection
- Review
Omnisend offers many visual templates aimed at retail and ecommerce campaigns.
We also found a Text only template, which was useful for our delivery test.
The editor was straightforward and did not require much time to understand.
Our general impression of the interface was positive.
Omnisend has one of the easier interfaces we have tested so far.
The main exception was the Domains area, which was not immediately obvious when we first looked for custom-domain authentication.
Free-Plan Branding
During our test, the free account appended:
Powered by Omnisend
to the email.
Omnisend indicated inside the editor that removing this branding requires moving to a paid plan.
This is worth knowing if maintaining a fully white-labeled email experience matters to you.
Omnisend Automatically Enforced an Unsubscribe Link
We intentionally edited our simple test message.
When the campaign no longer contained the required unsubscribe link, Omnisend detected the issue before continuing.
The platform displayed a warning explaining that promotional emails require an unsubscribe link and automatically inserted:
Update preferences or Unsubscribe
into the message.
That is a useful safeguard.
Instead of relying on the user to remember basic compliance elements, Omnisend actively prevented us from proceeding without an unsubscribe mechanism.
Preview and Test Sending
Omnisend provides a dedicated Preview & test workflow.
During our test we could:
- preview the email
- preview Dark Mode using a beta feature
- see the approximate email size
- send a test email to an address that was not yet an active campaign contact
Omnisend also warned that emails larger than roughly 100 KB may be clipped by Gmail.
For our simple text test, the email size was approximately 9 KB.
Test emails can be sent to multiple addresses by separating them with a comma or space.
Omnisend also warned that test emails may land in spam and that this does not necessarily represent normal campaign delivery.
That warning became relevant during our own test.
Our Shared-Domain Yahoo Test Landed in Spam
Before authenticating our own domain, Omnisend used one of its shared sending domains.
Our first test message was sent using a soundest.email sender address.
The message successfully reached our Yahoo test account, but it landed in the spam folder.
This was only one test, so it should not be interpreted as a broad deliverability benchmark for Omnisend.
It was also a preview/test email rather than a production campaign.
Still, it gave us a useful baseline.
We then authenticated our own PG Systems Lab sending domain and repeated the test.
Custom Domain Authentication
Omnisend allows users to replace the shared sender with their own verified sending domain.
For pgsystemslab.com, Omnisend asked us to configure:
- SPF
- DKIM
- DMARC
One detail we liked was that Omnisend detected our existing SPF record and generated a merged version rather than suggesting that we blindly create a second SPF record.
For our setup, the existing SPF authorization was preserved and Omnisend’s required Mailgun authorization was added.
Omnisend also provided a dedicated DKIM record.
Our existing DMARC value already matched what Omnisend expected, so no DMARC change was required.
After saving the DNS changes, the domain was verified successfully.
Verified-Domain Test: Yahoo Inbox
After verification, we changed the Omnisend email sending domain from the shared domain to:
pgsystemslab.com
We then created a new campaign using:
contact@pgsystemslab.com
as the sender and repeated the Yahoo test with essentially the same simple message.
This time, the message arrived in the Yahoo inbox rather than the spam folder.
Yahoo’s authentication information showed:
- SPF: PASS
- DKIM: PASS
- DMARC: PASS
This does not mean that domain authentication guarantees inbox placement.
Deliverability depends on many factors, including sending history, message content, recipient engagement, reputation, and list quality.
But in our specific test, the result was clear:
Shared Omnisend test sender → Yahoo spam
Verified PG Systems Lab sender → Yahoo inbox
For us, that reinforced the value of configuring a branded sending domain before relying on a platform for real campaigns.
Omnisend Email Capacity / Plan Fit Calculator
Estimate your monthly email sending volume and see which published email-capacity tier may fit your usage.
Estimate boundary: This is a capacity estimate, not a price quote or purchasing recommendation. Free capacity is shown for up to 250 contacts and 500 emails/month. Standard capacity is estimated as billable contacts x 12 emails per billing cycle; Pro has unlimited email credits. Check current pricing and plan details on Omnisend before purchasing.
The calculation runs only in your browser. It does not request an API key, email address, credentials, billing data, or store data, and it does not send your calculator input to PG Systems Lab or an AI provider.

One Small Friction Point: Existing Drafts
After verifying our domain, the global Omnisend settings showed pgsystemslab.com as the email sending domain for both campaigns and automations.
However, an email campaign draft that had been created before verification still retained the old shared soundest.email sender.
Creating a new campaign correctly showed the verified PG Systems Lab domain.
This was not a major problem, but it was slightly confusing.
If you authenticate a domain after already creating campaign drafts, check the sender address before sending.
What About Automations?
We also opened the Automation section.
This is where Omnisend’s ecommerce orientation became especially obvious.
With our non-ecommerce account and no connected store, the interface told us:
This feature needs a store connection.
We could inspect the automation area, but we could not perform a meaningful hands-on automation test without connecting an ecommerce store.
Because of that, we are not treating Omnisend automation as tested in this review.
For a future ecommerce-specific test, connecting Shopify or another supported store would be necessary.
What We Liked
Based on our hands-on test, the strongest points were:
- clean and understandable interface
- easy campaign creation
- strong ecommerce orientation
- useful text-only option alongside visual templates
- clear preview and test workflow
- automatic unsubscribe-link protection
- custom-domain authentication guidance
- SPF/DKIM/DMARC support
- branded-domain sending
- straightforward campaign sender configuration after verification
The interface was one of the more pleasant parts of the experience.
We rarely had to guess what the next campaign step was.
What We Did Not Like
A few areas caused friction.
Domains were initially harder to find
The platform itself was easy to navigate, but the first custom-domain setup took slightly more searching than expected.
Once we found the Domains area, the actual DNS instructions were clear.
Ecommerce dependency is real
Omnisend lets non-ecommerce users register and create campaigns, but many of the product’s most interesting capabilities depend on connecting a store.
That makes the product less compelling for businesses that do not sell online.
Existing drafts may retain the old shared sender
After switching to a verified sending domain, our earlier campaign draft still showed the previous shared Omnisend sender.
A newly created campaign used the branded domain correctly.
Who Should Consider Omnisend?
Based on what we tested, Omnisend appears best suited to:
- small and mid-sized ecommerce businesses
- Shopify-focused businesses
- ecommerce agencies managing email marketing
- teams that want campaigns and ecommerce automation in the same platform
- businesses that value a relatively simple interface
Who May Want Something Else?
Omnisend may be less suitable if:
- you are not running an ecommerce business
- you only need basic B2B newsletters
- you need general-purpose marketing automation unrelated to store activity
- you want to test advanced automations without connecting a store
In those cases, a more general email marketing platform may fit better. For a broader agency-oriented evaluation framework, see our Best Email Marketing Software for Small Agencies.
Our Verdict
Our first impression of Omnisend was positive.
The UI was easy to understand, campaign creation was straightforward, and the platform handled several important email-marketing details automatically.
The domain-authentication workflow also worked well once we found the correct settings.
Most importantly, Omnisend does not try very hard to hide what it is.
This is an ecommerce-focused email and marketing automation platform.
That specialization is a strength if you run an online store.
It is also the main reason we would not recommend it as a default choice for every small business.
For small ecommerce teams and agencies working with ecommerce clients, however, Omnisend deserves serious consideration.
Our hands-on result: campaign creation worked, custom-domain authentication succeeded, SPF/DKIM/DMARC passed, and our verified-domain Yahoo test reached the inbox.
